Santiago de Chile

Our group from ISU at the Valle Nevado Ski Resort at 10,000 ft. in the Andes mountains. We're here to discuss international exchanges for faculty and students at 3 universities in Chile and 1 in Mendoza, Argentina. This is Kiki, Jeff, me, Aslihan, and Klaus. Jeff is our college dean, his wife Kiki, Aslihan - professor from Agriculture, and Klaus - professor from Technology

High in the Andes mountains

PBR...and I don't mean Pabst Blue Ribbon!

In professional bull riding, the cowboy must ride 8 seconds to earn a score. Judges rate each rider on how well he matches the bull's moves and maintains control of the ride. They judge the bull on his athleticism, which takes into account direction changes, spin, kicks, and height of jumps.



The overall winner is the rider with the highest combined score on five bulls for a three-day event. We attended the finals in St. Louis in February.

The funniest name for one of the bulls was Booger Red. As expected, he threw the rider off in less than 4 seconds.

I prefer bikes over bulls.

Battening down before the Epic (?) Storm

"They" say we should anticipate being snow-bound for 48 hours. Shadow relocated herself to the garage. She gives her new digs 5 stars.







The storm arrived promptly at 11:58 am complete with horizontal snow fall, and I haven't seen the Koerner Farmstead since. This is supposed to be the lighter stuff as the real storm will begin this evening.














Perhaps most troubled by this storm is Dan. Hm.








Dire situations requires one to prioritize. Pizza dough.

Wrapping up (or trapping up) 2010

Here is our fearless dog taking a snooze. Tom and Dan fixed her up a few years ago with cedar siding on her house and a heater under her mat. Oh dear, and you can even see some evidence of Trapper Tom's work in the lower left corner! He needs to check the traps again.




Here I am on my last bike ride of 2010. It was 19 degrees with a SE wind at 12 mph. This is our 600 North Road looking west. Enlarging this picture is not recommended. I reached my goal of 1500 miles in 2010, but the last 22 miles were rather unpleasant.




This picture was taken on 3500 East Road facing north. This was the only stretch of road that was snow covered (it is next to Tom's Koehler Farm).

Elroy - Sparta Bicycle Trail

I stopped by to see the Elroy-Sparta State Trail in Wisconsin while traveling to a conference in Minneapolis. The trail is the first rail-to-trail of its kind in the US. It dates back to near ancient times - 1967.





I would like riding on this trail because it is relatively flat!








For $5 bucks in Minneapolis you can rent a bike for 24 hours. I doubt anyone steals the bikes because, as you can see, they are too ugly. The city was impressive with its myriad bike lanes and bikers circumnavigating through the pouring rain during rush hour traffic. I prefer my quiet township roads.







Rob and Amy were equally as fascinated as me with these rent-a-bikes.
