The patient ran out of patience today. He is supposed to be keeping his knee elevated and iced until he sees the doc on Thursday. And, for the most part, he has followed those instructions. But today he was convinced that he could drive both the SUV and the 4 wheeler (in order to check his bean field).
Meanwhile, Dan has been having his own adventures at American Legion Boys State @ Eastern Illinois University. Tom waited in the lobby while Dan and I got him checked in, found his room, and made up his bunk. I started opening his duffel bag to put clothes away when Dan simply said, "Mom, you're killing me." This was his polite way of saying I'm 17 years old and you don't need to be unpacking my things. So I backed off and good thing I did because suddenly his roommate arrived. He went in the room, set down his stuff, and started to leave without saying a word. Next thing out of my mouth was, "Well, I'm Barb, Dan's mom, and you must be..." And the nice looking young man said Connor. So Connor and Dan shook hands and introduced themselves.
Dan walked back to the lobby to say goodbye to us and that was that. I cried once I got to the car. I doubt Dan cried, and I know Tom didn't. Getting Dan to respond to a text message (from his mother) is also a stretch. Dan's buddy, Kyle, is also at Boys State so I texted Kyle's mom and asked her to ask Kyle to ask Dan to send his mother a text indicating whether he was alive or not. Within 10 minutes Dan sent a text that said, "I'm alive." This is why mothers go grey. He sent some follow up texts indicating that he is doing fine.

LOL - oh, Barb! All of this made me chuckle out loud (although not Tom's accident - glad he is ok). I have the same problem with Kate - just reply to a text to let me know you are alive. "I'm alive". Just so you know, dads go grey, too.
